The functions of this Unit include:

  • Develop national policies and measures for the regulatory control of activities and practices governed by the Radiation Protection Act;
  • Uphold IAEA Safeguards Agreements, Protocols and activities
  • Design national programmes for occupational radiation protection in compliance with the requirements of the international Basic Safety Standards (BSS) and the Radiation Safety and Security Act
  • Enforce regulations as established under the Radiation Safety and Security Act and take appropriate action for non–compliance.
  • Monitor and implement projects and programmes approved by IAEA Agency
  • To establish standards for the protection of public health, safety, security and the working environment from potential adverse effects of ionizing radiation;
  • To harmonize and streamline national capabilities for occupational exposure control, and improve the provision of dosimeters and associated services.
  • To establish and maintain a national register of radiation sources
  • To cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the application of safeguards in accordance with the Safeguards Agreement and any protocol,
  • Ensure that workers have maximum protection against risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation and atomic energy.
  • Ensure proper disposal of radioactive waste and control of nuclear or radioactive material
  • Work in close collaboration and in tandem with the Radiation Protection Authority and the Board of Directors appointed under the Radiation Safety and Security Protection Act
